It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bart, also known as Bartholomew, the beloved two-toed sloth at Out of Africa Wildlife Park. Bart passed away peacefully Saturday January 13, 2024, at the age of 17, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, joy, and an immeasurable contribution to the educational and emotional lives of park visitors and staff.

Bart the sloth

First arriving at Out of Africa in 2007, Bart captured the hearts of everyone who came to know him. For nearly 17 years, he served not only as an animal resident but also as a gentle ambassador for his species. Teaching us the virtues of slow living, Bart exemplified a life well lived—full of leaves, vegetables, and the pieces of cucumber, his favorite treat.

A Haven Tailor-Made for Bart

Linnaeus’s two-toed sloths, like Bart, typically live between 15 and 20 years in the wild. Out of Africa went the extra mile to make Bart’s life as enriching as possible. His specially-designed enclosure included two hammocks, a nod to the treetop lifestyle of sloths in their natural habitats. Bart seemed to appreciate these touches deeply, spending countless hours lounging in his hammocks, much to the delight of visitors.

Nocturnal Adventures

Although sloths are known for their leisurely pace, Bart was quite the adventurer at night.

Irreplaceable and Forever Loved

Bart was more than just an animal resident; he was a family member and a superstar in his own right. He contributed to the education of his species and was often the highlight of a visitor’s day. To be in Bart’s presence was to feel a sense of peace, and his slow, deliberate movements served as a reminder to us all to take life at our own pace.

As we bid farewell to our dear friend Bart, we remember the lessons he imparted, the joy he brought, and the conversations he inspired. Bart may have moved at a sloth’s pace, but he made a quick and everlasting impression on all of our hearts.

He will be greatly missed by everyone who had the privilege of meeting him.

Rest in peace, dear Bart. You were one of a kind.
