Animal Enrichment Wish List

Enrichment is a vital part of the daily care of the animals at Out of Africa Wildlife Park. It helps animals exhibit their natural behavior, provides a source of exercise, gives them variety in their environment, and enhances their well-being. We benefit from that enrichment as well, simply by observing their enjoyment.

There is a host of items we can always use at Out of Africa Wildlife Park. Our animal keepers have created a wish list of items to help enhance the lives of our animal friends, provide additional mental and physical animal stimulation, and assist in improvements. You can buy things on the list and contribute them to the park, or make a contribution so we can buy high-priority items. Additionally, there are gently used items we gladly accept.

Good to know: Unlike most zoos in the United States, we are not supported by municipal, state, or federal funds. We are a privately owned facility, and not a 501(c)3 charitable organization. It’s important to realize that your contribution is not tax deductible, but does provide vital funds that help to support the ongoing efforts of Out of Africa Wildlife Park to develop new habitats and shelters for the animals, support wildlife conservation programs, provide funds for the health care of the animals, and provide education outreach to the community.

Bring a Gift to the Park—Choose an Item From Our Wish List

If you would like to bring a new or gently used item from the wish list to the park, we welcome your generous contribution. Even if you have an item not listed here that you feel may benefit the park, please contact us at 928.567.2842 or email us at [email protected]. Thank you for your support and generosity!

Toys for Tigers

ToySplash.com, a leading online pool and water toy retailer headquartered in New Stanton, Pennsylvania, offers the opportunity to the general public to purchase some of the tiger’s favorite toys and have them donated to Out of Africa Wildlife Park®. If you would like to make a toy purchase for the tigers, simply log on to the ToySplash website at www.toysplash.com. A list of suggested toys can be found on the ToySplash blog, The Splash Deck, found on the website’s home page. Choose the items you wish to purchase and enter the promo code TIGERS. In addition, ToySplash is donating 5% of the profits from the “Toys for Tigers” program to Save Tigers Now (http://www.savetigersnow.org); a plan sponsored by the World Wildlife Federation to end tiger poaching and killing.

TOYS

The park animals love toys, and it is not uncommon to see some of the animals playing with their industrial-strength toys. Boomer balls, PVC piping, barrels, etc., are all used to encourage activity. Some toys roll, some dangle, some float. Some have holes drilled throughout to allow treats to be placed inside, which fall out when manipulated to encourage mental and physical stimulation.

SCENTS & SOUNDS

Scents encourage the animals to explore their territory and even mark the area themselves. As spices, extracts, and essential oils are dispersed in the animals’ habitats — such as on the ground, in a tree, on a rock, or inside a toy — animals will often rub on or roll in the scented area and display natural behaviors such as foraging or stalking. Visual and auditory items can also enrich the animals, as sights and sounds may elicit other natural instincts and intellect.
