Racing to Save Rhinos: A Look Back at Our World Rhino Day 5K

This wasn’t just any race — it was a celebration of World Rhino Day and a chance to show some love to our very own Southern White Rhino, Jericho. The Rhino Run 5K kicked off bright and early at 7:00 AM, bringing together runners, walkers, families, and cheerleaders alike. From the first lap to the final step, the day was all about community, conservation, and having fun while supporting an incredible cause.

Every year on World Rhino Day, we pause to honor one of the planet’s most iconic species. For us at Out of Africa Wildlife Park & Sanctuary, this day carries special meaning as we celebrate Jericho. Rhinos are magnificent and powerful, yet deeply vulnerable — facing threats from habitat loss and poaching. This year’s event reminded us all that conservation is a shared responsibility, and that together, we can protect these incredible animals for generations to come.

Race Highlights

The competition was fierce and inspiring! Congratulations to our top finishers:

  • 🥇 1st Place: Izaiah Burgos
  • 🥈 2nd Place: Steve Richardson
  • 🥉 3rd Place: Mike Norton
  • 👟 1st Place Woman: Michelle Richardson

But the real victory was seeing so many participants come together with one goal in mind: racing to save rhinos.

A Day of Conservation-Driven Fun

After the run, the celebration continued with live music from DJ X Factor, tasty eats from Not Your Routine Poutine, Eye’s & Ear’s Corn Roasters, and Sarah’s Sourdough Bread, plus fun for kids with Carol’s face painting and a special coloring contest. Conservation partners like Friends of the Verde River and community supporters from the Copper Canyon Fire & Medical Department added even more energy and purpose to the day.

Guests also had the chance to snag World Rhino Day t-shirts (with proceeds supporting the International Rhino Foundation), enter our raffle baskets and enjoy the park’s famous shows like Tiger Splash.

Thank You!

We want to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who joined us — participants, volunteers, vendors, sponsors, our photographer Ranger Lashley (@thezoographer), and our dedicated staff. Together, you made this an unforgettable day filled with conservation-driven fun.

Your support made a real difference for Jericho and for rhino conservation worldwide. 🦏💚
